May Enrichment

This post is way over due. My youngest child is finally in kindergarten, so I am trying to catch up with my life. Back in May, yes, 3 months ago, we had an Enrichment on Emergency Prepardness. It has held at the Gailey's home. They gave us a tour of their food storage. Pictured below is the storage under their stairs. They also have storage in their garage as well. I do like checking out what others are doing when it comes to food storage. It kind of helps you understand where you stand, and what you need to do. It is unfortunate that we don't have a lot of space in Hawaii to devote to food storage.

Among other things discussed, Loha brought an emergency backpack kit for us to see. This isn't a backpack that she put together, but rather one that can be purchased. It gave us an idea what kinds of things to include. I didn't realize that I need to include gloves as well. Also, I think I should buy a tube tent. It doesn't take up a lot of space.

Bro. Gailey provided a meal for us using your food storage. He made a lot of differet dishes.

Bob's Caribbean Black Bean and Rice

Bob's Creole Red Beans and Rice

Bob's Lentil Soup

Bob's Navy Bean Soup

Bob's Pinto Beans and Hamhocks

Bob's Split Pea Soup

The sister returned home well fed. Can't miss any event held at the Gailey's home.

March Enrichment, Humanitarian Aid

This was our first Enrichment of the year. The focus this year will be on

Preparing for the Times: Helping Self & Others.

To kick off the new year, there were 4 workshops on making humanitarian items to be sent to the Church Headquarters for distribution.

Sis. Alama and Sis. Gailey worked on wall quilts. These quilts will be used in nurseries to help stimulate infants as they must spend a good part of the day confined to their cribs.

For newborns, a few sisters started on knitting beanies.

Sis. Clements group worked on making file folders. File folders are used to teach children basic skills such as matching, patterns, numbers, and counting.

Sis. Velasco's group worked on making school bags for school children.

As usual, Candy donated her time to preparing a wonderful meal. She designed her meal around the theme of "Preparing for the Times" by using foods commonly found in our pantry.

Here she is making a vegetable lentil soup.

With the assistance of two of our youth, Candy prepared a potato croquette.

And Tuna and Egg Noodles with Cream Cheese Sauce.

The sisters of the ward enjoying this fabulous meal.

It was a wonderful Enrichment. It was the first time our ward has done this type of humanitarian aid projects, so it was exciting to see the projects. We will be working in smaller groups on a monthly basis to complete more of these projects. We hope to be able to send a sizable amount to Church Headquarters at the end of the year. Stay tuned throughout the year as we track our progress.

Sis. Pilch, our Enrichment Leader, put together this Enrichment. Thank you Sister Pilch and to all the teachers, the kitchen crew, and the set up and clean up crew. We had a great turn out, and I am sure the sisters enjoyed themselves as they learned a new skill as well as did some service.
